For Renewable Energy Co-operatives (RECs) to make a meaningful contribution to Canada’s net-zero objectives, they need to find a way to scale their activities and expand their influence with citizens, policymakers, and each other. The Scaling Up the Impact of Renewable Energy Co-operatives in Canada Summit was held in Ottawa in May 2023 to address these issues. The summit brought together key stakeholders in the REC sector, and included panels on REC start-ups, obstacles and success stories, the public policy perspective, and the ecosystem in which RECs operate. REC leaders held roundtable discussions covering the panel sessions and reached a consensus to create a national REC league that will amplify the sector’s voice. This new league will be called the Community Energy Co- operative Canada (CECC).
